Preparing The String

The Anchor:

As we all need a solid place, the spinning top needs an anchor. The string must be anchored to the top spinner's hand in order to spin the top. A button is often attached to the top string to anchor the string in the top spinner's hand.

The other end of the top string is tied in a knot for two reasons. Firstly, the knot keeps the string from freying and falling apart. Secondly, the knot provides a second anchor for the top spinner to use.

The String:

There are several things that must be true of string used for spinning tops.
  1. String must be good quality with a fine wrap. Commonly, top string consists of three strands spun together.
  2. String used for spinning tops must be clean.
  3. The best top string is made of cotton.
  4. Top string must be strong.
  5. Top string must be free of knots and tangles.
  6. The length of the top string affects how the top is spun. A short string causes the spinning top to rotate faster as it is spun. Longer string makes the rotation slower.
  7. It is necessary to adjust the length of the string to the height of the top spinner, and to the size and weight of the spinning top. Normally the top string is about sixty inches long. Some people prefer the string shorter. It might be necessary to experiment with the length of the top string to make it just right for you.
  8. A knot must be tied in the string to mark the length.
  9. Cut the string so the button is on one end and the knot on the other.
